Why go
Palenque is often described as the first free town in the Americas. Founded by escaped enslaved Africans led by Benkos Biohó, it kept Palenquero, its own Spanish-based creole, plus its own music and funeral traditions. Go with a local guide so the money stays in the town. Ask before you photograph people.
