What it is
A cone of mud you can float in. The crater holds dense mud that holds you up. It is ridiculous, and that is the point. Agree any tip before a massage, a photo or a rinse.
Getting there
Tours from Cartagena include hotel pickup and often lunch at La Boquilla or Manzanillo del Mar. Independent travel by bus is possible but slow.
The experience
- Climb the wooden stairs to the crater.
- Float in the mud; it’s impossible to sink.
- Wash off in the lagoon, often with help from local women.
Tips and payments
There’s an entry fee at the site. Helpers will offer massages, photos with your phone and washing. These usually expect tips; agree amounts before you accept.
What to bring
- Old swimwear (mud stains).
- Cash for entry and tips.
- A waterproof pouch or leave your phone with someone you trust.
